The Challenge
- Weak linkages between land-use, transport demand and transport supply and representation of model dependencies
-
Limited sensitivity to transport policies; cannot capture daily travel pattern interdependencies
and within-households (trip chains); poor spatial and temporal demand resolution and representation - Existing traffic tools have no built-in methods for linking land-use, activity-based demand, traffic and energy/ emission models
- Difficult to customize on ad-hoc basis (for scenario and application case)
-
Integrating different models have scientific and technical challenges: Issues with consistency of I/O models’ data
interactions (mostly error-prone manual approach) and storage, different model scope, scale and resolution -
Requiring different software tools is associated with high monetary and resource costs for either training, licensing
or hiring new personnel
The Vision: New spatial and transport planning tools
A new generation of harmonized integrated tools for linking existing
and new models for spatial
and transport planning
Complementary platforms
to mainstream (widely-used) transport models with enhancements
for activity-based, new mobility systems, land-use and regional
economy modelling
A standardized data management framework that facilitates
the integration of independently developed models in different
programming languages and scales
The Solution: The Harmony Model Suite
- Multi-scale framework: Economic, demographic, land-use, transport and environmental models
-
Multimodal and innovative passenger and freight mobility
- Demand: agent-based multi-scale behaviorally-rich models
- Supply: enriched traffic simulations with new mobility concept’s operational and infrastructural dynamics - Built-in methods and interfaces with PTV, Aimsun or other products/models
- Different versions (lite, full) for different model integration approaches
-
A user-friendly GUI for configuring model selection requirements on ad-hoc basis; generation, analysis, evaluation
and management of different intervention scenarios and their outputs
The Challenge
Value Added to Modelers
Highly configurable setting with modular design that allows:
- Configuration of existing models (LUTI, TFS, TPS, etc.)
- Insertion of new model(s) developed by the modeler outside the MS
Easiness of putting together multiple models following an input-output approach
- Makes the modeling process transparent
- e.g use one of the outputs of the Strategic Model (e.g., Population forecasts) as an input to the Tactical Model.
Template based definition of:
- Models (components)
- Projects
- Scenarios
Linkage with existing commercial simulation tools (e.g AIMSUN, VISUM)
- Enabling the continuation of using existing tools, without starting from scratch when a new type
of models come into play
- Safeguarding the investments made to develop models are not wasted in the first place
Visualisation of results for a high-level understanding
- KPIs
- Graphics
- Easiness of combining models following an input-output approach
- Easy scenario building through a template
- Linkage with existing commercial simulation tools (e.g AIMSUN, VISUM)
- Visualisation of results for a high-level understanding
- Better utilisation of resources with model building
Urban Mobility Platforms and SUMPS
By 2035, the global demand for urban mobility platforms
is projected to hit about $25 billion. With a volume of about 12.4 billion dollars, Europe is projected to be the largest region.
The high interest of EC in having more SUMPs in Europe
and the pressure on the cities to adopt a more sustainable urban mobility system opens new opportunities for HARMONY MS.
